What does my grinder need to fit the SpheroPlane?

The SpheroPlane is compatible with the Arbortech Power Carving Unit™ as well as any standard 115mm (4 1/2") or 125mm (5") angle grinder. However, when choosing an angle grinder to suit the blade, you should look for the following features:

- An auxiliary handle to ensure easier balance, manage and control. Using the handle when carving not only improves user comfort and visibility but increases user safety.
- On/Off switch to be positioned on the top or side
- 550 Watts power, at a minimum

Should have a spindle thread of:

- M14 (AUS and UK) |  M14 (Europe) | 5/8″ (North America)

The SpheroPlane can be used at a variable speed, corded or cordless grinder, as long as it runs at a speed of 9000 RPM or higher.

Help! The screw is stuck. What should I do?

If you're having trouble with a stuck screw, watch the following video: youtu.be/zCF5ayauo1Q or click the image below.

First, use a paperclip or similar tool to clear out all the wood dust. You’d be surprised how much can accumulate, so make sure to clean it thoroughly. If this method doesn't work, please try the below:

There is a way you can remove the blade using a bench vice.  If you turn the adjustment on the SpheroPlane most of the way down you will be able to position the blade low enough to clear the main body of the SpheroPlane If you clamp the blade GENTLY into a vice then you should be able to get enough leverage to "crack" the thread of the fastening screw using the locking arm of the SpheroPlane. IMPORTANT NOTE ---   Take care as to NOT clamp the 2 carbide teeth of the cutting disc in the jaws of the vice as this could potentially damage the carbide teeth. This can be done by turning the disc so the vice jaws clamp the disc between the 2 teeth. It is also advisable to use a soft material such as aluminium or even a cloth rag between the vice jaws and the cutting disc to further ensure that no damage is done to the cutting disc.

How big a sphere or bowl can I make?

There is no maximum size limit; however, for items exceeding approximately one metre in diameter, it is advisable to utilise the leveling guide for optimal results. This approach allows for achieving sizes of any dimension, even those measuring several metres across. The minimum ball so far is about 110 mm in diameter.

Why are my cutters wearing out so quickly?

If you notice burn marks or that your cutters are wearing prematurely, this may be due to concentrated contact during use. We recommend flicking off any dust or dirt around the area. A quick clean should resolve the issue.
